Deep Penetrating Light (DPL) Therapy for Natural, Drug-free
Pain Relief and Healing
QUESTIONS and
ANSWERS
"I am thrilled with my DPL system!
I've been using it on my face and for various aches and pains. It
actually worked a 17 minute miracle on jaw pain from a dental procedure...I
had been suffering for two days and finally decided to use the light,
laying the panel directly on the jaw and—TADA—the pain
is all gone and has not come back. I also used it on a friend whose
shoulder was hurting her, and after just one 17 minute treatment
the pain never came back." —Annette Kohn-Lau, N.D., Illinois
"I just wanted to thank you and let
you know that I have had amazing results from the DPL System. While
I initially purchased the unit for skin rejuvenation, I had excruciating
TMJ when I began use in April. My jaw suddenly stopped hurting and
I have not had ONE incident of the searing pain since I started
treatment!!! It has also brightened up my skin and given me a refreshed
look, plus it's plumped my lips...sweet!" —P.F., Kentucky
USING INFRARED LED LIGHT
THERAPY FOR PAIN AND HEALING
USING INFRARED LED LIGHT THERAPY FOR SKIN CARE
& REJUVENATION
"I've been using the light, per
the instructions, and find the psoriasis spot I mentioned to
you is almost healed. The light is actually accelerating the
healing process. Normally it takes about a week or so to heal
on its own. It has been only 3 days. Perhaps this is not a big
surprise to you, but coming from a person who suffers from various
skin problems, this is great news!"
—M.L., California
INFRARED LED LIGHT PRODUCT FACTS Q. How long will I have
to use an LED light before I see results?
A. For treatment of pain: You may need to use the system
a few times before you notice relief. For skin rejuvenation: Some people see results in as
little as a few days and others take a month or two to notice a change.
Various physical conditions, age, skin condition, diet, alcohol consumption,
prescription drug usage, smoking, exercise, and other factors influence
the rate of improvement. The effects of LED light are often subtle at
first, since unlike lasers, peels and other ablative treatments, LED light
does not damage the skin to force it to regenerate. Your results will
improve the longer you use the light; so though you should see improvement
in 60 days, you should see a much more significant change after you've
been using it for 6 months or a year.
Q.
How do infrared LED lights for home use compare to the photo rejuvenation
light treatments done in doctors' offices, spas and salons?
A. The concept and technology are the same. The difference is in cost
and convenience. One photo rejuvenation treatment in a spa or salon typically
costs $50-$200, and it's usually recommended that you get a series of
5 to 10 treatments several times a year. With home-use photo rejuvenation
lights you can enjoy unlimited treatments in the convenience of your own
home for less than $500. Note that if you are using the light for treatment
of chronic pain it may be reimbursed by your medical insurance. Contact
us for insurance information.
Q.
Is infrared LED light safe for sensitive skin?
A. The light is typically well-tolerated by those with sensitive skin
on all parts of the body except the face and chest. If you have very sensitive
skin and are using it on the face or chest, you might want to start with
a shorter treatment time and work up to the full treatment. Also, be sure
to begin with clean skin... lotions could heat up and cause a problem.
If there is any redness or discomfort after treatment, applying a damp
cloth afterwards may help calm down your skin.
Q. Will
infrared light help my rosacea?
A. We have seen rosacea patients who benefited from using the light, and
there have been a few who found they could not use it. If you have rosacea
we recommend going slow at first to see how your skin reacts. (see
sensitive skin tips above)
Q.
What is the difference between the DPL Therapy System and the LightStim?
A. In our opinion the most important differences are the number
of lamps, light wavelengths, treatment time and results... The DPL has
174 LED lamps, including 154 infrared. The LightStim has 72 lamps, including
only 36 infrared. Treatment time for the whole face is nine minutes with
the DPL. The recommended treatment time for the LightStim is four minutes
per area, and since the diameter of the light is only 2 1/2 inches it
takes about an hour to treat the whole face. Since results will only be
achieved with regular use, this time difference can be a critical factor
for busy people. I've used both lights (Lightstim for one year and DPL
since mid-June, 2006) and have experienced faster and better results with
the DPL system. See comparison chart
for other models.
Q.
I have seen some improvement using a Beurer Softlaser. How do other lights
compare?
A. The Beuer® light has only one 660 nm lamp. Most other home-use
lights have larger surface areas and utilize multiple wavelengths. This
means you get the benefits of multiple wavelengths over a larger area
in a shorter period of time. See comparison
chart for other models.
Q. Is LED
light treatment safe?
A. YES! It has been proven in numerous studies that LED light treatment
does not harm the human body in any way. The light waves are safe for
any age, color, or skin type. The light energy delivered cannot burn sensitive
skin tissue.
Q. Does LED
light therapy hurt?
A. NO! Unlike many other anti-aging treatments, LED light therapy is gentle,
painless, safe, noninvasive and nonabrasive. There have been no reports
of adverse reactions.
Q. Is
it safe to use an infrared LED light while pregnant?
A. We have been told by one manufacturer that it would be OK to use an
infrared LED light on the head, neck, face, arms and legs during pregnancy,
but as a precaution they recommend not using it around the abdomen. LED
Therapies, LLC recommends consulting your physician prior to using the
DPL™ Therapy System if you are pregnant.
Q. Do
you ever discount your DPL Therapy System?
A. Because of our incredible money-back guarantee, we occasionally have
returned units that are cleaned, tested and repaired if needed, then sold
as refurbished units at a discounted price. If you are interested in a
refurbished system, contact
us to see if we have any in stock. Also, we occasionally run
unadvertised specials. Contact us
to find out if we are currently running a special.
Q. Do you
have to replace light bulbs in the DPL Therapy System? If so, how often
do they need changed and how much are the replacement bulbs?
A. The DPL System is built to last over 5 years with daily use and the
LED bulbs, rated for 2500 hours (45 years at 9 minutes a day) should not
burn out within that time. The bulbs are built into the panels and are
not user-replaceable, but should replacement of a panel be needed they
can be replaced individually for $100-$110 each.
Q. I just
assembled my DPL Therapy System on the stand and the panels keep falling
off. Is this normal?
A. The panels are designed to be easy to remove for use on other parts
of the body, but the bracket that holds them should not fall off of the
vertical column. Watch
this 4-minute video to make sure your unit is assembled properly.
If it is, the top bracket that holds the panels will be difficult to remove.
USES & BENEFITS OF INFRARED LED LIGHT THERAPY
FOR PAIN AND HEALING Q. What will I
notice during and after treatment?
A. Different sensations are possible with use of the system. You may experience
a sensation of warmth, relief of pain, a calming or soothing effect, and
you may find you achieve a greater range of motion.
Q.
When will I feel better or see positive results?
A. Factors such as age, sex, level of fitness and various physical conditions
can affect how quickly the treatment helps. In cases where a condition
has lasted for many years (chronic) it may take longer to notice a benefit.
Q. How
often can I use the DPL™ System for pain and healing?
A. For pain relief, the maximum use of the system should be four 9 minute
treatment sessions, with 12 hours separating the first two 9 minute treatments.
Q. How
close to the skin should I hold the DPL™ System?
A. For best results the panels should be as close to the skin as possible,
and they may be placed directly on the skin. Center the panel(s) over
the main area of pain for maximum effectiveness.
Q. I
have arthritis in my hands. Will I be able to use the system?
A. Yes, the DPL™ System was designed with the arthritis sufferer
in mind, and hands can be held in front of the panels on the stand, or
the panels can be placed on or beneath the hands.
Q. I have
used my system for a couple of days; why am I still hurting?
A. Keep in mind that this system serves as therapy for minor discomfort;
it is not a miracle drug or pain killer and is not intended to replace
medication prescribed by your physician. Consult your physician if the
pain persists or intensifies, as this may be a symptom of other conditions
that need attention.
Q. Why doesn't
the system get hot?
A. The DPL System isn’t designed to generate heat, but some people
report that it gets warm or they feel warmth in their skin, and this is
normal. When you follow the recommended usage guidelines, the LEDs should
not get uncomfortably hot.
Q. I had
a huge bruise on my leg so I tried my LED light on it, and it went away
much more quickly than bruises typically do. I'm now using it on the bruises
that my daughter gets on her legs from climbing on playground equipment.
Does it make sense that the light works on bruises?
A. NASA research found that infrared
LED light accelerates healing, so yes, it may help bruises heal faster.
USES & BENEFITS OF INFRARED LED LIGHT
THERAPY FOR SKIN CARE & REJUVENATION Q. Will LED light therapy help
with acne or blemishes?
A. Although the anti-aging photo rejuvenation lights were not designed
specifically to handle acne and blemishes, the light waves stimulate the
skin's natural healing process which helps in the treatment of acne, pimples
and blemishes.
Q. I've
been looking for information on the LED light treatments that I've been
receiving from my skin care specialist. Is there a significant difference
between the benefits of blue and infrared/red light?
A. The choice of light depends on what you are trying to accomplish. BLUE
light comforts and soothes skin, and has anti-sensitive functions. It
is used clinically to treat acne, as it is absorbed by bacterial acne,
resulting in a toxic environment for the bacteria. RED
light stimulates and activates skin cells and promotes blood circulation.
VISIBLE red light penetrates to a depth of about 8-10 mm, and is beneficial
in treating problems close to the surface such as wounds, cuts, scars,
trigger and acupuncture points, and is particularly effective in treating
infections. INVISIBLE red light (infrared) is the longest wave length,
and penetrates to a depth of about 30-40 mm, which makes it more effective
for bones, joints, deep muscles, etc. Infrared light is absorbed by the
skin and used as a source of energy to stimulate fibroblast cell activity
in the skin, which increases the production of collagen and elastin—the
proteins responsible for your skin's tone and elasticity. Most infrared
LED lights produce both red and infrared wavelengths, and are effective
for rejuvenating aging skin as well as treating acne and blemishes.
NOTE REGARDING BLUE LIGHT: We made
the decision to not sell a blue light because it has been shown to damage
the eyes if used without the proper protection. If you decide to purchase
a blue light, be sure the merchant supplies proper eye protection. And
if you have a teenager using it for acne be sure he/she actually uses
the eye protection!
Q. I've been
receiving red light therapy to firm my skin and reduce wrinkles and I've
seen a slight improvement after many sessions, but not as much as I'd
like. Will infrared work better?
A. It's very likely you will see better results with infrared light.
As explained in the last question, infrared light penetrates much deeper
than red light, so it is able to reach the layer of skin where collagen
and elastin are produced.
Q.
What is the best wavelength of infrared light for skin rejuvenation? And
what is the importance of joule ratings?
A. There are over 30 commercial systems on the market using similar and
different LED wavelengths. Most companies say that the specific wavelengths
they are using are *the best* so it's hard for the consumer to determine
what is true. We feel that the NASA study is the most independent and
accurate of the studies, so that was the one used to develop the DPL System.
The NASA study used three LED wavelengths: 670nm, 728nm and 880nm. The
880nm (infrared) proved to be the most effective when tested alone in
both 3T3 fibroblast DNA synthesis and osteoblasts DNA synthesis. Our DPL
System utilizes and 154 infrared (880nm) LEDs and 20 red (660nm) LEDs.
However, the real key to achieving results is the energy
delivered (joules/cm2), not the particular nm of the LEDs. Many units
have variable energy output that goes as high as 150 joules/cm2. Our DPL
Therapy System reaches 4 joules/cm2 on the skin, like the NASA study specified,
in 9 minutes. Some more powerful systems used by physicians and spas reach
this level more quickly, but these machines are too expensive for home
use and can be purchased only by licensed professionals. For example,
the GentleWaves system reaches the required output in under 1 minute,
but the machine costs tens of thousands of dollars.
Q. While
doing research on the Web I read that yellow light is effective for skin
rejuvenation. What are the benefits and results of infrared and red light
therapy vs. yellow?
A. I am aware of some testing done comparing yellow light to red and infrared
wavelengths. Without question, red and infrared were found to work better
for skin rejuvenation.
Q.
Will infrared LED light help with hyper-pigmentation (age spots) or scarring?
A. YES, I have seen reports of hyper-pigmentation and scars fading over
time from the use of these lights.
Q. Will
infrared LED light help with dry skin?
A. YES, using infrared LED photo rejuvenation lights according to directions
will help normalize dry skin.
Q.
Will infrared LED light help with thinning hair? Will it help re-grow
hair?
A. I have read reports of accelerated hair growth and stimulation of dormant
hair follicles with the use of infrared LED light.
Q. Can LED
light treatment be used on someone who has been treated recently with
Botox® injections?
A. I believe that although the light would cause no harm to the tissue,
since it has a regenerative effect it might shorten the life of the paralyzing
effect of Botox, so the person might want to avoid using the light around
the injected areas until the Botox wears off.
Q.
Will the DPL System work for stretch marks
and loose skin on the stomach?
A. I'm not aware of any of our customers who have used the light
on stretch marks, so I forwarded this question to the manufacturer. Here
is their reply: "We have customers who are using the system on the
stomach and for stretch marks, and I know that is it very helpful with
scaring... the age of the scar tissue will determine the time required
to see results." Also, when I was selling a different light (smaller
and less powerful) I heard about a woman who used the light on a scar
while she was laid up in bed for 10 days. She said the scar diminished
a great deal during this time by treating it for 15 minutes a day.
Q. Will
the DPL System help with psoriasis?
A. The red and infrared lightwaves of the DPL System increase circulation
and help put moisture back into the skin, which benefits those with psoriasis.
One of our customers told us "I've been using the light, per the
instructions, and find the psoriasis spot I mentioned to you is almost
healed. The light is actually accelerating the healing process. Normally
it takes about a week or so to heal on its own. It has been only 3 days."
Q.
Can DPL Therapy help with other types of problems?
A. In addition to skin rejuvenation, infrared and near-infrared (NIR)
light often helps with the temporary relief of minor muscle and joint
pain; arthritis and muscle spasms; relieving stiffness; promoting relaxation
of muscle tissue; and temporarily increasing local blood circulation.
HOW TO APPLY AN INFRARED LED LIGHT Q. How long do you need to apply the LED
light for skin rejuvenation?
A. Recommended treatment time varies among different brands of LED lights,
and I've seen these recommendations change over time as more data is collected.
Generally, for the quickest results, daily use is recommended. The recommended
treatment time for the light we sell—the DPL™ Therapy System—is
nine minutes a day for the first 4-10 weeks, then nine minutes two-three
days a week after that.
Q. The
DPL System instructions say that after 4-8 weeks of using it twice a day,
I'm supposed to use it only 2-3 times a week. Won't that slow the rejuvenation
process down? What will happen if I continue using it daily?
A. It's recommended to use the system twice a day at the beginning
to build up circulation and stimulate your skin, which will cause it to
respond to the LED light. You can continue twice a day usage up to 10
weeks if you would like. After that you should be able to use the system
just 2-4 times per week and your skin should continue to respond nicely.
Some of our customers have continued to use the system daily after 10
weeks, and we have heard of no ill effects. However, should you notice
redness, irritation, peeling, or other unusual effects we would recommend
cutting back on usage.
Q. How
far away should I place the light from my skin?
A. The light intensity becomes weaker the further away it is from your
skin, so it's best to use the light very close to your skin. It is fine
if the DPL Therapy System touches your skin.
Q. Does
the light work through clothes?
A. Some materials can prohibit the system from delivering the treatment
most effectively. If possible, use without clothes on the treatment area.
Q. The DPL
Therapy System's user manual says to use the system for 17 minutes. I
thought the treatments were 9 minutes?
A. The recommended time to treat pain is 17 minutes. However, for skin
rejuvenation you can do either two 9-minute treatments or one 17-minute
treatment. After 2 months of use, most people are able to reduce usage
to one 9-minute treatment every day, or 3-4 times a week.
